Care and Cleaning of Hardwood Floors

Engineered hardwood flooring is a lot like traditional (solid) hardwood flooring, but with enhanced stability and durability. While solid hardwood floors are consistent all the way through, engineered hardwoods feature a high-density fiberboard core that makes the floor more resistant to moisture and denting. After installing engineered hardwood flooring, Portland OR homeowners often ask about the best way to maintain these high-quality floors.

The short answer is that engineered wood floors require pretty much the same cleaning techniques as any other hardwood flooring. Keep your floors in top shape with the following practices:

Sweep regularly.

Dirt and dust particles can leave fine scratches on the surface of engineered hardwood flooring, so it’s important to sweep at least a couple of times per week – ideally every 2-3 days. Use a soft-bristle broom or a dry mop to avoid leaving extra scratches. It also helps to vacuum every week or so using a soft brush attachment to pick up any finer particles the broom missed.

Remove oil buildup.

Over time, oil deposits will begin to dull the surface of your flooring. Portland OR homeowners can remove this buildup and restore the floor’s natural shine by using a cleaner that’s specifically made for pre-finished hardwood flooring.

Avoid harmful products.

According to Kentwood, a leading manufacturer of engineered hardwood flooring, a vinegar and water cleaning solution may occasionally be used, especially if there is a greasy residue on your floor. But use it sparingly, as the acid in the vinegar can damage the floor’s shine. And when cleaning engineered hardwood flooring, Portland OR homeowners should avoid these products entirely: detergents, oils, waxes, polishes, bleach, scouring agents, all-in-one floor cleaners and oil soaps.
